University Scholarships

Listed on this page are scholarships for people seeking asylum and refugees who hold temporary visas (TPV, SHEV, BV). These scholarships are limited and highly competitive but we urge people from refugee backgrounds and asylum seekers to apply.

However, it must be acknowledged that there is often little opportunity to pursue further education at University after obtaining secondary education. Refugees and asylum seekers on temporary visas are not offered any help from the federal government in terms of access to subsidised study or access to HECS and HELP loans. This means it is very expensive and almost impossible for most people seeking asylum or refugees under temporary visa status to go to University without any assistance.

Universities across Australia have offered scholarships dedicated to refugees and asylum seekers in trying to address this issue. The Refugee Education Special Interest Group has played a role in advocating for these scholarships and related support services.

Note that some scholarships listed on the tables below are also available for settled refugees with permanent residency. The information on the tables below should be checked with the institution offering the scholarship before it can be used for any purpose.
